Graeme Swann: Positive Mental Attitude
Hello Coach, I am an Off Spin Bowler, please share a few cricket tips and techniques to help me take wickets consistently.
Hi, here are a few basic spin bowling tips …
Spin the ball hard and aim to spin it above the batters eyeline so that he has to watch the ball go up and down from your hand.
When you spin the ball hard you will impart extra revolutions to the ball, which will make it drift across the batters eyeline and drop on him, like a top spin shot in tennis.
This drift and dip asks the batters brain to ‘work harder’and creates error in the batters judgement.
This is really the art of spin bowling, deceiving the batter in the flight.
Practice until you have complete control of your stock ball, so that you can land it consistently.
When you can do this you can introduce your arm ball which goes straight on, your floating arm ball which drifts away from the right hander to induce the edge at slip and your palm ball which you put slightly deeper in the hand and look to get the batter caught driving.
Do homework on your fields – its important to be able to settle into your spell.
If your a young spinner you can start with your field out, to bring it in as you get your rhythm and control.
You can look to have a sweeper on both sides of the field to protect you from the ball you drag down going for four.
As you become more competent and confident your field comes up, to the point where you start with your field up and squeeze the batters as soon as you come on.
It will of course be dependent upon your age, experience and skill level.
Whatever your age, engage the batter in the contest, look them in the eye and bowl with the expectation of doing well.
A positive mental attitude goes a long way. So aim to create pressure, be patient and don’t overbowl your variations, its important to allow your stock ball to build pressure and then draw the batter into a false stroke with your variation.
Best wishes Coach
