Cricket Tips : Cricket Warm Up

by PAUL
(BRISBANE)

Hi Coach, can you detail a typical pre match warm up from run throughs, stretches and fielding drills.

Hi Paul, the first part of the warm up for the player and the team begins off field, with preparatory thinking about what are the challenges of the coming game.

The warm up is both mental and physical.

Who are the opposition ?

What are their strengths and weaknesses?

Where are we playing and what are the keys to playing well on this ground?

What do I need to do in my preparation to ensure that achieve my goals?

Are there particular strategies that I need to prepare to ensure I that I play to my strengths and neutralize the key aspects of their game?

This can be done collectively as a cricket team or you can do it individually.

Once you have done the mental preparation, on match day you will have the cricket team warm up.

This needs to meet the needs of the team in general and the individuals and their personal disciplines.

So you design it to ensure that the team warm up together and then you create enough space for the players to do individual warm up, including personal stretches and activities based on their disciplines.

This will take less than an hour for the whole team.
Warm up: Part One – General warm up with 3 minute shuttles over 20 metres to get the players ready for a team game.

Team Game – 10 mins – light intensity whilst the body warms up and prepares for higher intensty – involving a fielding game, handball, frisbee, touch rugby etc to get the whole team involved and the brain linked to a focusing activity involving hand eye co-ordination.

Stretch – 5 mins- Dynamic mobilisation stretch, preparing the body for dynamic movement.

Game – Back to the game for another 5 mins – raising intensity and speed.

Stretch – 5 mins – More stretching – covering major muscle groups – followed by personal stretches for players.

Fielding Warm Up: 20 mins : Split into groups

5 mins – Throwing Warm Up for Shoulder health.

Inner ring fielding incl: begin with under arm flicks, flat cover catching, cover intercepting and throwing to the keeper.

Outer Ring fielding: Boundary riding, catching, throwing, intercepting, overhead catches.

Personal Disciplines: 10 mins – Split into groups for cricket discipline warm ups for batters, bowlers and wicket keeper.

Target bowling for bowlers, throw downs for batters and personal drills for the wicketkeeper.

This is based on what we do at professional level and can be amended to level and time requirements.

Best wishes Coach
