Hi Coach, I am fast bowler, I have problems with gripping the ball.
My fingers are small unlike Morne Morkel, so it does not allow me to cover the ball well and this damages pace and control. Please give me some tips to help with this.Osama
Hi Osama, interesting you should ask this question, I was chatting to Saqlain Mushtaq about this the other day and we both agreed whether you are bowling spin or fast you need to have a good grip on the ball.
He shared a story of Wasim Akram’s when asked the same question and Wasim replied that you should grip the ball with the same firmness as if you were going to throw it.
Now going back to hand size, it should not matter if your hand is small, you just need to have a good firm grip and make sure that your fingers and wrist are in position for the delivery you want to bowl.
You don’t mention your age, if you are a young bowler in age group cricket you should be using a ball appropriate to your size and age.
Best Wishes Coach
