Faf Du Plessis’s Top Ten Cricket Fielding Tips

South Africa’s Star Fielder Faf Du Plessis’s shares his Top Ten Cricket Fielding Tips

Fielding Tip 1. The most important thing is to WANT the ball.

Fielding Tip 2. If you want the ball then you are already mentally prepared for any event in the field.

Fielding Tip 3. Anticipation: I always place myself in positions where I think the ball will go to the most.

Fielding Tip 4. Body Position: I like to be low before the ball gets hit and in a position where your head and balance is still, so you can move equally well to either side.

Fielding Tip 5. Practice diving: I practice diving to learn how to dive well. When the opportunity comes that’s almost impossible, I’ve been practising it, you never know you might just catch it !

Fielding Tip 6. Throwing: Work on your throwing technique, it will keep your arm healthy longer and give you improved accuracy.

Fielding Tip 7. Focus: I like to focus in tight on the contact point of the bat and ball when the shot is being played so I can get a good read of where the ball is going.

Fielding Tip 8. Switch Off and On: Let your mind switch off between balls, chat to your team mate, throw the ball around to keep your arm warm and then switch your focus back on when the bowler runs in.

Fielding Tip 9. Assess Your Fielding Skills. Ask your Coach to assess your fielding game so that you have areas to work on, becoming a complete fielder can be the difference between getting selected and not.

Fielding Tip 10. Challenge Yourself: Do some extra work, to become good at any aspect of your game you need to work at it, fielding is no different. Take extra catches … do some extra target throwing, practice sliding and flicking … it won’t be long and you’ll get reward for your extra work.
